Book Review Magic Shifts by Ilona AndrewsBooked & Loaded

Magic Shifts by Ilona Andrews is the 8th book in the Kate Daniels series. It is no secret this is a favorite series of mine, but if you are a follower of this blog you should know that I tend to expect the same kind of quality throughout the series that made me fall in love at day one. Magic Shifts not only lived up to my expectations, it surpassed them! The love, the laughter and the action. A recipe for pure AWESOME. **May contain some spoilers to previous titles, but I tried to keep it as spoiler-free as possible and not giveaway anymore than the blurb does.

At the end of the last book, Magic Breaks, a lot of huge changes took place and I truly wondered if any author had the ability to change that much surrounding these characters and still make it believable. How would it be possible for Curran to leave the pack after that being such a huge part of his identity? I was blown away that Andrews not only made it work, but transitioned smoothly. Like butter. Kate and Curran are always in the middle of trouble and Magic Shifts only amped up the amazing world building. The descriptions for each creature and battle are flawless and beautiful.

The character growth that continues to build in this series is not only limited to the main characters, but all of the secondary characters as well. I felt this installment took it a step further, in part because Curran was no longer a political head many of the characters were more open and it allowed their growth to shine through. Honestly, I feel like anything I say to describe how wonderful this book is pales in comparison to its actual greatness.

All-in-all I am not sure any other current series exist that have this kind of quality character development, world building and emotion inducing elements in them. Andrews draws out bursts of laughter and tears from me like a puppet master all while orchestrating a complex backstory and complete book at once. I think they might be wizards.

If you have been waiting to pick up this series, don’t wait too long! This is Urban Fantasy at its absolute best!!

I rate Magic Shifts 5 out of 5 Bullets!
