Book Review: The Iron Duke (Iron Seas #1) by Meljean Brook

The Iron Duke is Meljean Brook‘s first title in her Iron Seas Series.  Brook’s does a phenomenal job in both character and world development.  The combination of grit and romance came together like fire and ice for a beautiful combination.  I loved the Iron Duke on so many different levels that I am sure this review is going to sound a little gushy.  =)

I connected with the lead character, Mina Wentworth right from the start.  She was smart, strong, and just purely accepting of who she was, no matter how different.  Brooks describes amazing technologies with a grungy and vivid clarity.  Her unique world seamlessly transports you into a different shade of history.

The hints of mystery added a great element to the overall story.  World building was not anything short of  dazzling.   The chemestry between Mina and the Rhys (the Iron Duke)  felt natural and smooth on every front.  I also enjoyed Mina’s personal relationships with all the secondary character as well.  She just seemed to come alive and make everyone around her equally colorful.  I didn’t want this story to end.

I loved the plot line following a revolution, yet included lots of great conflict.  The touch of science fiction feel to this book completely fulfilled and surpassed everything I would look for in a steampunk title.

I think that readers of many different genres will enjoy the Iron Duke.  Every one from Historical buffs to Sci-fi fanatics and everyone in between.
